[IxT] Piccolo test del fine settimana; l'appello UE per l'origine delle merci

Allarme rientrato! Si è trattato semplicemente di un problema temporaneo del name server che gestisce tanti altri siti oltre ad attivissimo.net. Tutto risolto, nessun attacco personale.
Bene! Adesso posso tornare a quello che volevo raccontarvi in partenza oggi.
Se vi siete mai chiesti perché ce l'ho tanto con Internet Explorer e lo considero un freno allo sviluppo dell'informatica, ho preparato una dimostrazione facile facile.
L'attuale Internet Explorer, anche se aggiornato con tutti gli Update possibili, non supporta ancora correttamente gli standard del Web. In particolare, non gestisce correttamente i cosiddetti "CSS", o "Cascading Style Sheets", che sono comodissimi per la creazione di pagine graficamente gradevoli senza sforzo.
Questa violazione degli standard da parte di IE, esistente da anni, impedisce per esempio una lunga serie di effetti grafici che potrebbero rendere più gradevole, sicuro e accessibile il Web, perché evitano di dover ricorrere a tecniche più complesse e insicure come Javascript e ActiveX.
Per dimostrarlo, ho modificato temporaneamente la pagina iniziale del mio sito (http://www.attivissimo.net). Se la visitate con Firefox o Opera o Safari, noterete un bell'effetto: il testo è come appoggiato su una lastra di vetro semiopaca, che lascia intravedere lo sfondo (ovviamente una foto del mio gatto, nel più classico stile vanesio delle pagine dei siti Web personali, ma che ci posso fare se ho un gatto bellissimo?).
Se invece provate a visitare la stessa pagina con Internet Explorer, la magia è rovinata: l'immagine non scorre correttamente e la semitrasparenza è assente. E' per incompatibilità come queste che IE è un danno per la Rete e per chi ci lavora.

L'effetto, fra l'altro, è ottenuto usando HTML puro e semplice. A dimostrazione che, se si rispettassero gli standard, non sarebbe necessario usare tecnologie complicate e fragili.
A proposito invece dell'appello che gira, secondo il quale un articolo del Sole 24 Ore parla di obblighi o non obblighi di indicare il paese d'origine per le merci importate da paesi extra-UE, non si tratta di una bufala in senso stretto: non ho avuto tempo di preparare un'indagine formale, ma l'appello cita un articolo del Sole 24 Ore che effettivamente esiste e un sondaggio in Rete effettivamente preparato dall'Unione Europea:

Se vi state chiedendo cosa vuol dire "Compulsory" nel modulo del sondaggio, significa "obbligatorio".
L'origine dell'appello, stando alle segnalazioni che mi sono arrivate, è un commento di un visitatore del sito di Beppe Grillo.
La scadenza dell'inchiesta-sondaggio UE, come detto nell'appello, è effettivamente oggi 30 aprile 2005.

Dalle 15 circa di oggi, www.attivissimo.net è kaputt. Volevo soltanto avvisarvi che ne sono al corrente e ci sto lavorando.
E' presto per dire con precisione cos'è successo, ma sembra che il nome di dominio www.attivissimo.net, e il suo gemello www.attivissimo.info, siano stati rimossi dai DNS. Anche Gandi.net, dove erano registrati, è irraggiungibile. Il server che ospita il mio sito, invece, è perfettamente operativo: semplicemente non è raggiungibile digitando il nome del mio sito.
Non credo si tratti di un attacco personale, ma potrò essere più preciso nelle prossime ore.

[Ixt] Trend Micro ammazza i PC; spyware Microsoft; tasse sull'iPod; prossime apparizioni; madonne sui muri

La società antivirale Trend Micro ha fatto un pasticcio: ha pubblicato un aggiornamento di PC-Cillin e altri suoi prodotti che ha mandato in palla i computer di oltre quattromila aziende. Rapida corsa ai ripari, ma la figuraccia è fatta e il danno agli utenti pure. A volte fa più male l'antivirus che il virus:

...E siamo giunti, così, alla legge 21 maggio 2004, n. 128. Attualmente, visto che, come detto, la normativa è ancora in vigore malgrado le promesse del Ministro su quel disegno di legge di cui si dirà, la situazione può essere così riassunta:
- tutte le violazioni contemplate dall'art. 171-ter l.d.a. (in pratica fonogrammi e videogrammi) sono, ora, punite a mero titolo di profitto, in luogo del precedente lucro...
- il file sharing, nella prospettiva della comunicazione con messa a disposizione (di chi, in sostanza, pone in condivisione) è punito, sempre anche a titolo di mero profitto, con le sanzioni, penali, applicate per le aggravanti...
- il download, pur mediante canali e strumenti di sharing, di materiali protetti è, invece, rimasto di mera rilevanza amministrativa; semplicemente perché il pur ipotetico caso di chi scarica soltanto (senza condividere alcunché di protetto) non pone in essere quella comunicazione sanzionata dal legislatore...
... sarebbe troppo superficiale fermarsi al dato letterale di una legge che, in quanto scritta male, non garantisce interpretazioni univoche...
... il più ampio ambito punitivo (il profitto in luogo del lucro) è stato proposto dall'On. Lego Star Wars: recensione spassosa della BBC

...Everything is recreated in impressive detail and absolutely looks like it is built from bricks. Characters and creatures are faithful to both Lego and Star Wars. They are much more flexible than their plastic counterparts but the appearance is spot-on, right down to the stick-on hairpieces...Though menacing on film, Darth Maul becomes deliberately ridiculous as a squat Lego figure running around on stumpy legs.
The game restores humour to a franchise perilously low on laughs since Han Solo exited. Lego Star Wars is happy to load cut-scenes with visual gags and even pauses for gratuitous and surreal dancing interludes.
The impassioned frowns and comical noises made by the Lego men adds to the fun - the sound Jar Jar Binks makes when he plummets off a ledge is both funny and hugely satisfying.
John Williams' familiar musical score runs throughout and adds to the ridiculousness, as the determined little figures do battle to the solemn strains of an orchestra in full flow... The game rarely impresses visually, but it's the sheer charm of seeing Lego men play Star Wars that wins you over.... any game that features Liam Neeson and Christopher Lee as Lego characters has to be doing something right."

Il bello è che la volontarietà dell'uso delle immagini risultava chiara: "Il Giudice... affronta il nodo problematico fondamentale, ovvero la verifica del carattere consapevole e volontario della memorizzazione sull'hard disc del PC dell'imputato delle immagini pornografiche in esso rinvenute, posto che tale attività materiale appariva inconfutabile dalle risultanze processuali."
Inconfutabile.
Come ti scagiono il pedofilo? Collisione in orbita fra rottami USA e cinesi
U.S.-China Space Debris Collide in Orbit:
Il 17 gennaio 2005 si sono scontrati in orbita un rottame di un lancio
spaziale statunitense di 31 anni fa e un frammento di un vettore cinese
più recente, a un'altitudine di circa 885 km, fascia assai popolata di
frammenti di lanci spaziali. I due oggetti seguivano orbite quasi
uguali, per cui non si e' trattato di uno scontro frontale, ma di un
"tamponamento".
L'incidente e' stato rilevato dal sistema di sorveglianza spaziale statunitense e i dettagli sono nel numero di aprile di The Orbital Debris Quarterly News, pubblicato dalla NASA.
Lo spazio è grande, ma ci vuole maggiore responsabilità per non lasciare in giro pezzi che prima o poi possono far danni ad altri veicoli in orbita. Se un frammento centrasse uno Shuttle o la stazione spaziale (o peggio ancora il proposto ascensore spaziale), sarebbe un bel guaio.

e dell'Informatica". Il forum l'ha accettato.
Del resto, l'articolo accettato ricalca i paroloni degli organizzatori, che non hanno neppure l'attenuante di essere stati scritti da un computer. Cita The Register e io traduco: "una metafora... stiamo cercando di rapportare il pensiero analitico necessario in sessioni di conferenza focalizzate con il pensiero sintetico necessario per la generazione di analogie, che richiede un dominio multifocale e un pensiero divergente. Carina come idea da esplorare, ma mi pare decisamente infondata. Si può
argomentare che un font elettronico costituisce un "programma"?
Distribuire un documento non è equivalente a fornirne il "sorgente"?
Non credo valga la pena di perderci il sonno, ma è comunque importante
esplorare i meandri del diritto informatico per dare rassicurazioni a
chi sente certi discorsi terroristici fatti dalle grandi società

Google ha lanciato un nuovo servizio di mappe che includono l'opzione
di visualizzare, invece della mappa tradizionale, una foto satellitare
equivalente. Funziona solo per alcune zone del pianeta (principalmente

se ha davvero localizzato le coordinate giuste, ma comunque la
dimostrazione è interessante. Notare che il tetto della Casa Bianca è
"oscurato" digitalmente come misura antiterrorismo, ma l'Area 51 (se è

[Ixt] Se usate OpenOffice.org, vi conviene turare una falla
C'è una falla nel popolare programma OpenOffice.org,
alternativa libera e gratuita a Microsoft Office. Basta aprire un
documento appositamente confezionato per consentire a un aggressore di
prendere il controllo del PC della vittima. Il problema tocca tutte le versioni di OpenOffice.org (OOo per gli amici) per tutti i sistemi operativi.

Su un fronte più personale, vi chiederei di dare un'occhiata al mio blog (http://attivissimo.blogspot.com) e di mandarmi due righe con le vostre opinioni. Non potrò rispondervi singolarmente, ma ci tengo a sapere che ne pensate di un progetto che ho in mente. Mi spiego.
Attualmente il mio blog è una discarica a cielo aperto, nel senso che ci scarico dentro tutte le cose interessanti (perlomeno per me) che trovo nelle mie esplorazioni in Rete e le metto a disposizione di chiunque voglia leggerle. Molte volte si tratta di spunti per articoli che non avrò purtroppo mai modo di scrivere (perché almeno per ora non posso fare questo lavoro a tempo pieno), e di citazioni di articoli e pubblicazioni in inglese.
Se le traducessi e commentassi brevemente, vi interesserebbero? E preferireste una newsletter o l'attuale forma del blog (o entrambe)? Sto pensando di farlo; un vostro interesse potrebbe essere persuasivo per eventuali sponsor.

Molti di voi mi hanno segnalato uno strano sito-trappola, www.posteitaliane.tk, sospettando che si tratti di un altro caso di "phishing": un sito disonesto costruito a immagine e somiglianza di un altro più rispettabile, nel quale l'utente non attento immette i propri codici di accesso, permettendo al truffatore di rubarglieli e quindi depredargli i conti correnti o qualsiasi altro servizio offerto dal sito rispettabile.
Non sembra però trattarsi di un phishing vero e proprio: esaminando l'HTML del sito, infatti, risulta che è un "redirect" al vero sito delle Poste Italiane. Praticamente chi lo visita interagisce effettivamente con il sito delle Poste.
C'è inoltre una questione strana: nell'HTML del sito viene inserito un indirizzo IP variabile, che corrisponde (perlomeno nel mio caso) a quello che ha il mio router ADSL visto dall'esterno. La cosa mi incuriosisce molto e mi piacerebbe capirne la tecnica e le implicazioni, anche perché non vorrei fare una segnalazione errata alla Polizia delle Telecomunicazioni (anche se non è phishing, potrebbe essere una violazione del copyright). Se avete idee in proposito, mi trovate al solito indirizzo: topone@pobox.com.

Attualmente il mio blog è una discarica a cielo aperto, nel senso che ci scarico dentro tutte le cose interessanti (perlomeno per me) che trovo nelle mie esplorazioni in Rete e le metto a disposizione di chiunque voglia leggerle. Molte volte si tratta di spunti per articoli che non avrò purtroppo mai modo di scrivere (perché almeno per ora non posso fare questo lavoro a tempo pieno), e di citazioni di articoli e pubblicazioni in inglese.
Se le traducessi e commentassi brevemente, vi interesserebbero? E preferireste una newsletter o l'attuale forma del blog (o entrambe)? Sto pensando di farlo; un vostro interesse potrebbe essere persuasivo per eventuali sponsor.

Molti di voi mi hanno segnalato uno strano sito-trappola, www.posteitaliane.tk, sospettando che si tratti di un altro caso di "phishing": un sito disonesto costruito a immagine e somiglianza di un altro più rispettabile, nel quale l'utente non attento immette i propri codici di accesso, permettendo al truffatore di rubarglieli e quindi depredargli i conti correnti o qualsiasi altro servizio offerto dal sito rispettabile.
Non sembra però trattarsi di un phishing vero e proprio: esaminando l'HTML del sito, infatti, risulta che è un "redirect" al vero sito delle Poste Italiane. Praticamente chi lo visita interagisce effettivamente con il sito delle Poste.
C'è inoltre una questione strana: nell'HTML del sito viene inserito un indirizzo IP variabile, che corrisponde (perlomeno nel mio caso) a quello che ha il mio router ADSL visto dall'esterno. La cosa mi incuriosisce molto e mi piacerebbe capirne la tecnica e le implicazioni, anche perché non vorrei fare una segnalazione errata alla Polizia delle Telecomunicazioni (anche se non è phishing, potrebbe essere una violazione del copyright). Se avete idee in proposito, mi trovate al solito indirizzo: topone@pobox.com.
E' sottinteso, comunque, che non è prudente passare da posteitaliane.tk per interagire col proprio conto corrente postale :-)

Con la scomparsa di Giovanni Paolo II, non potevano non riaffacciarsi, come tarli da un mobile antico, i veggenti e i profetologi che offrono (preferibilmente a pagamento) interpretazioni nefaste delle varie profezie disseminate da Nostradamus e altri personaggi storici.
Ora è il turno di San Malachia, che avrebbe previsto due soli papi dopo Giovanni Paolo II; finito il loro papato, finirà il mondo. O almeno così pare. Se vi interessa un'indaginetta su una delle profezie papali più celebri, la trovate qui:

Troverete molto più inquietante l'indagine antibufala che ho fatto, con molta riluttanza in quanto gattofilo, a proposito di un sito, t.i.n.k.e.b.e.l.l. punto com, che mostra immagini di gatti scuoiati per farne borsette. Purtroppo non è una bufala, ma dietro quelle immagini non c'è una crudeltà fine a sé stessa, ma una donna che vuole far parlare di sé facendo leva sullo scandalo (ma non poteva posare per un calendario senza veli o sposare un calciatore come fanno tutte le altre del suo genere?):

Infine c'è una buona notizia per i più smanettoni: se vi piace snidare i bachi nei programmi, non fatelo in quelli commerciali, ma dedicatevi a Firefox, Mozilla e Thunderbird. L'astronauta e imprenditore Mark Shuttleworth ha infatti messo in palio 500 dollari per ogni baco che verrà scoperto, e le prime ricompense sono già state assegnate: un tedesco, fra l'altro, s'è portato a casa 2500 dollari perché ha scoperto ben cinque falle.

known software that will not work with Service Pack 2. Most of the
software will either not run or will display a blue screen of death
during installation of the software or when you start up your

PCs at 251 businesses in the U.S. and Canada, asset tracking company

In turn, that brought Real People to our forum. Others created forums for their localities - Sweden, Denmark, Italy, whatever," he writes.
...Credit must go to author Andrew Brown, for precipitating the uncovering of the hoax. In his Guardian column [not yesterday, but last April] he sounded a note of caution... the hoax wouldn't have grown legs, and scampered into the public prints, if it hadn't been for a press pack resolutely determined to overstate the transformative power of technology...

Alex Tatham, commercial director at Bell Microproducts, ... said: "A stripped down version without media player is only available on the OEM version and there is no price differential. So whilst we will offer it - we haven't got any in stock. As for licensing stock keeping units (SKUs) - I believe that there will be no SKU difference other than the media kit - and until there is a price difference - we won't be offering the product. I am expecting differing retail boxed SKUs - but can't see any evidence of this yet on their (Microsoft’s) most recent price list."
This ties in with HP saying that with no price difference there will be no incentive to buy Windows without Media Player.

We're talking some hot stuff here: private phone numbers of celebrities, childishly-written notes revealing all sorts of interesting personal and business details, and photos, including several nude pix... Although there's still some question as to just how Paris Hilton's phone was compromised, it seems that the answer to her security question wasn't that hard to guess: "What is your favorite pet's name?" Anyone who knows anything about Paris knows about her little chihuahua, Tinkerbell.
...What do you think happened when people found out? Was there an en masse switch away from the Sidekick II? Of course not, silly! ...According to the gossip blog Gawker, after the Paris Hilton incident, sales of the Sidekick II skyrocketed in New York, selling out in many stores. That's right. People specifically wanted the same phone that had just been hacked.
...As a window into the mind of your average Joe, this anecdote is priceless. It's a bit like hearing about the sinking of the Titanic, and then announcing that you're buying a ticket on an ocean liner since you just found out about cruises. It just goes to prove that ordinary people don't give a hoot about security... There are just so many interesting attack vectors for cell phones. To start with, there's the obvious threat of physical theft. It's one thing for a thief to heft a desktop box out of your office building, and it's easier to grab a laptop, but even my Mom can sneak a cell phone out past your guards... you can set phones up so that they appear to be off, leave the phone behind - say, in a conference room - and then call the phone and imperceptibly turn on the speakerphone, allowing you to hear everything said while you're out of the room....

Symantec said some of it anti-virus software has holes in it. The company admitted its Norton Antivirus, Norton Internet Security and Norton System Works, 2004 and 2005 editions, were so flawed hackers could quite easily sneak in and knobble computers running the software.
Japan’s Information-Technology Promotion Agency told Symantec about one situation with both Windows versions of Norton AntiVirus 2004 and 2005, where a real-time scan of a specific file type can cause the Blue Screen of Death to appear. The programs’ Auto-Protect and SmartScan features were found to be faulty and susceptible to Denial of Service attacks. Red-faced company engineers released patches for the holes and distributed updates to users of its LiveUpdate automatic update service.
Symantec said it assessed the Risk Impact of the discoveries as low.
